If you’re in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa you might think this means travelling until you run out of money and then working solidly for 6 months until you can afford to travel again but this isn’t the only way to go about things. If that sounds like your kind of plan you should check out my post on how to find a job in Australia but if not then keep reading for ways to fund your travels without committing yourself to months stuck in one place…
Figure out where your skills lie and you might be able to offer a service remotely. Websites like Fiverr allow you to create an account to sell a specific service for a fixed price (in that case $5). For example, if you’re a graphic designer you could offer personalised designs or logos for bloggers and brands.
If you’re looking for bigger projects you can try a website like Upwork, which connects freelancers with people requiring specific services. These are usually bigger projects and the people seeking the service will create a post outlining exactly what they’re looking for someone to do, how much they’re likely to pay for the service and when It needs to be completed by. If you think you’re up to the job then you pitch yourself to the advertiser much in the same way you would apply for any job. The more work you successfully complete with Upwork the more successful your pitches will be!
If you’re looking for temporary work your best bet is to sign up with a company or agency, like Workfast Australia, that specialises in recruiting temps. It’s really easy to find the kind of work you’re looking for as you create a profile and are matched with the jobs that best suit you, which saves you the time of trawling through the sea of temp adverts out there.
Another benefit to working this way is that you are employed as a contractor through Workfast which takes the hassle out of the payment process for the recruiter, which in turn means you get paid for your work without any delays. Once the assignment is over there is a rating system for you to rate the employer and vice versa, which again makes it more likely for you to be accepted when applying for future positions.
